Should a liberal society allow sex work?

In the print NYT edition, I frequently see advertisements featuring expensive jewellery worn by beautiful women, and I think I know who purchases this jewellery for whom. – I ask myself, is it a form of prostitution if she marries him (or he marries her) solely for financial gain, to obtain wealth?

And if one accepts this form of coexistence, that is, relationships in which one side offers beauty and sex and the other offers wealth and power in exchange, then in such a society, the debate about whether to allow prostitution would have to be conducted differently.

I ask for reasons. In Germany, the conservative government wants to ban sex work. And I cannot shake the suspicion that this is a case of double standards.

Takeaway thought: In a liberal society where people decide for themselves what relationships and exchanges they enter into, where the role of the state is to enable these exchanges, but also to prevent harm, shouldn’t all people in such a society be allowed to decide for themselves what they do?
