The Story

About a traveller

Take me with you.

This is about Richard John Steves Jr., short: Rick Steves. He is one of the most famous travel journalists of our time. His Youtube channel Rick Steves’ Europe has 1,43 million subscribers. This short story is to celebrate and recommend Rick Steves and his work.

Tell me more.

Steves is an American travel writer, author and activist. His travel philosophy encourages people to explore less-touristy areas and destinations and to become immersed in the local people’s way of life. Although his videos aim at a North American audience, his work is fascinating for Europeans. He looks at Europe from the outside. No multimillion-euro marketing campaign could do more for the European tourism industry.

Which video should I start with?

Since I am still in the Swiss Alps for holidays, I recommend this one

The Upside.

Rick Steves is a bridge builder. He is a star in the USA, he wants every American to go to Europe, and he is helping many to afford it. Because much of his work is focused on cutting costs. The staff writer at The New York Times Magazine Sam Anderson wrote in a long and worth reading piece about Steves: “He wants you to go as many times as possible, and while you’re there, he wants you to get way down deep into the culture, to eat with locals in the teeming markets, to make a sympathetic fool of yourself, to get entirely lost in your lack of America.”
